There are two species of camel: the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) and the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius). About 90% of the world’s camels are dromedary camels, also known as the Arabian camel. All existing dromedary camels are domesticated. Meanwhile, there are two types of Bactrian camels: wild and domesticated. The camels at the Camel Farm are dromedary, which are camels with one hump.
More than 3,000 years ago, camels were domesticated. They are used by humans for numerous reasons, but most often for travel across arid climates. Camels can survive for long periods of time without food or water. They can easily carry an extra 200 pounds and can walk about 20 miles a day through the harsh desert climate. Camels also provide humans with food (milk and meat) and textiles (fiber and felt from hair).  More...

The Kangaroos

Picture
Diet:Kangaroos are herbivores that eat a wide range of plants. Their diets vary depending on species. The animal has a chambered stomach, similar to that of cows, to help with the digestion process. Kangaroos also have highly specialized teeth. Its incisors are able to cut grass and shrubs extremely close to the ground and its molars are designed to grind down the vegetation. Its molars fall out regularly due to the wear and tear that comes with its diet and are replaced with new teeth.
The species has an unusual eating practice. The kangaroo regurgitates grass and shrubs that it has already eaten and chews it once more before swallowing it for final digestion. A kangaroo can survive for long periods without drinking water, as it is hydrated by the moisture in the vegetation it consumes.  More...

The Water Buffalo

Description of the Water BuffaloThese large animals are somewhat cow-like in appearance, with stout bodies and thick horns. Their horns extend outwards from their heads, and then point back towards their shoulders. These large mammals vary in color, some are black, others slate gray, and some rare specimens are albino.
Males are slightly larger than females, and stand 52 in. tall at the shoulder. They are quite heavy animals, and can weigh anywhere from 660 lbs. to 1,210 lbs., though it is not unusual for them to surpass 2,000 lbs.   More...
